Characterization of renal masses: Is there a threshold for differentiating noise from true enhancement on subtraction imaging?

چکیده
Introduction Soft tissue enhancement is the most important characteristic diagnostic for a renal neoplasm. Postprocessing image subtraction has been used successfully in MR in characterizing and evaluating enhancement of renal lesions. However, image noise is a potential pitfall in MR subtraction imaging. Our objective was to evaluate if there is a threshold signal-to-noise ratio of subtraction images for distinguishing nonenhancing from enhancing renal lesions.

Renal masses: quantitative analysis of enhancement with signal intensity measurements versus qualitative analysis of enhancement with image subtraction for diagnosing malignancy at MR imaging.
PURPOSE To retrospectively compare quantitative and qualitative methods of assessing magnetic resonance (MR) imaging contrast enhancement as the basis for diagnosing renal malignancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS MR imaging was performed by using a gadolinium-enhanced breath-hold fat-suppressed three-dimensional T1-weighted gradient-echo sequence in 71 patients (48 men and 23 women; mean age, 62 yea...
متن کاملRadiologic Imaging of Renal Masses
Renal cell carcinoma is the third most common urologic malignancy. In the United States in 2010, 58,000 individuals were diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, of which approximately, 13,000 died. [1] The European Union has experienced a relative increase of 30% for this malignancy over the past two decades. [2] The countries of central and eastern Europe have among the highest recorded incidence...
متن کاملThe Diagnostic Value of B-Mode Sonography in Differentiation of Malignant and Benign Tumors of the Parotid Gland
Introduction: Different imaging modalities are used to evaluate salivary gland diseases, including tumors. Ultrasonography (US) is the preferred method on account of its ease of use, affordability, safety profile, and good tolerance among patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of US in differentiating malignant from benign parotid tumors, in the context of previous controversy...
متن کاملRemoving ECG Artifact from the Surface EMG Signal Using Adaptive Subtraction Technique
Background: The electrocardiogram artifact is a major contamination in the electromyogram signals when electromyogram signal is recorded from upper trunk muscles and because of that the contaminated electromyogram is not useful. Objective: Removing electrocardiogram contamination from electromyogram signals. Methods: In this paper, the clean electromyogram signal, electrocardiogram artifact and e...
متن کاملCharacterization of Small Renal Masses Less than 4 cm with Quadriphasic Multidetector Helical Computed Tomography: Differentiation of Benign and Malignant Lesions
PURPOSE To identify the characteristic quadriphasic (unenhanced, corticomedullary, nephrographic, and excretory phase) helical multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) features of renal masses less than 4 cm to distinguish benign from malignant renal masses. MATERIALS AND METHODS In total, 84 patients were retrospectively analyzed to determine the characteristic features for the prediction of...
